It's our seventh birthday, and all month long we're turning the keys over to THE FRIENDS OF HYPERREAL 💛🌟🫂
Behold the film the Boston Globe proclaimed "The CITIZEN KANE of alcoholic clown movies." The film Martin Scorcese defended from uncultured critics. The film Leonard Maltin gave his lowest rating ever. SHAKES THE CLOWN. This nearly forgotten 1991 gem is the directorial debut of Bobcat Goldthwait (Police Academy, World's Greatest Dad, Willow Creek), who also wrote it and starred as the titular Shakes.
All's not well in the town of Palukaville; Shakes, it's star birthday clown, has hit rock-bottom from alcoholism and philandering. Worse, a trio of cocaine-crazed rodeo clowns frame him for murder to take his top spot. To clear his name and win the war of the clown clans, shakes must not only rehabilitate himself, but also team up with the most hated genre of performance artists... mimes. Robin Williams cameos as Mime Jerry, and Adam Sandler co-stars in his second-ever film role, along with Julie Brown and Kathy Griffin.
Coulrophobia, be damned! Come and see SHAKES THE CLOWN.
