HFC PRESENTS: POPCORN (1991)

HOTEL VEGAS, 1502 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702, USA

Popcorn (1991) is an early example of the trend in 90s horror films to be self-aware, or self-referential, or to explore the history of the genre. The main story line (college film students organize an all-night horror movie marathon in an abandoned theater while being stalked by a mysterious killer) is a basic horror plot dressed up with fun costumes and creative death scenes. The true pleasure in Popcorn is the four original “classic” horror films created exclusively for this movie, each representing a different subgenre of classic horror. Accompanying the screening of each film-within-the-film are William Castle-like gimmicks akin to his invention of flying a giant skeleton over the audience during the original theatrical run of “House on Haunted Hill”(1959). There are many treats in Popcorn to delight the viewer with some insider knowledge but enough fun camp and eye catching visuals to engage the casual or new horror buff. After all, who doesn’t like Popcorn?
